kb-staleness-check

kb-staleness-check is a skill for Claude Code from SteveGJones/ai-first-sdlc-practices. It costs 64 tokens per session (1,773 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A check that compares a knowledge-base index with the library files it describes. It reports changed or missing entries without rebuilding the index, and can optionally make stale data fail validation.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it during environment validation, in pre-push hooks, or whenever you want to know whether the index needs rebuilding.
Why use it?
An outdated index can cause searches to miss recent research. This check lets you detect that drift manually or as part of a pre-push check before changes are shared.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00064 $0.01773
Opus 5.5 $0.00026 $0.00709
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00013 $0.00355
Haiku 4.5 $0.00006 $0.00177

Security

Grade A, and why

kb-staleness-check scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 1mo ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Knowledge Base Staleness Check

Verify that the knowledge base shelf-index reflects the current state of the library files. Reports drifted entries without making changes. Designed as the touch-point between the knowledge base plugin and existing SDLC validation operations.

This is the opt-in environment validation extension described in the EPIC. The plugin does not modify the existing validate skill in sdlc-core directly — instead, this skill is shipped as a standalone check that users can invoke manually or wire into their pre-push validation when they want it.

Argument

  • (no argument) — warning mode (default). Reports stale entries; exits 0 regardless. Informational only.
  • --strict — strict mode. Reports stale entries and exits 1 if any drift is found. Use this when wired into pre-push hooks where stale indexes should block the push.

Preflight

  • Verify the knowledge base is configured (the [Knowledge Base] section exists in CLAUDE.md).
  • Verify the shelf-index file exists at the configured path.
  • If neither exists, exit 0 silently with a single-line note: "No knowledge base configured; skipping staleness check." This makes the skill safe to wire into pre-push hooks unconditionally — projects without a knowledge base see no impact.

Steps

1. Read the configured paths

Parse the [Knowledge Base] section from CLAUDE.md for:

  • library_path (default library/)
  • shelf_index_path (default library/_shelf-index.md)

2. Compute current hashes

Use the same logic as kb-rebuild-indexes:

find <library_path> -name "*.md" \
  ! -name "_shelf-index.md" \
  ! -name "_index.md" \
  ! -name "log.md" \
  ! -path "<library_path>/raw/*" \
  -exec sha256sum {} \;

Build {file_path → current_hash}.

3. Read recorded hashes from the shelf-index

Parse the shelf-index, extracting each entry's **Hash:** field. Build {file_path → recorded_hash}.

4. Compare and classify

For each file:

Recorded Current Classification
Missing Present Added (file exists but no index entry)
Present Missing Removed (index entry but file deleted)
Present Differs Modified (file changed since index)
Present Matches Fresh

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
