An audit of Final URL Expansion in Google Ads Performance Max campaigns. This setting lets Google choose landing pages beyond the URLs set for an asset group.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to review URL expansion status, asset-group URLs, and landing-page performance such as clicks, cost, and conversions.
Why use it?
Automatic page selection can send visitors to pages that do not fit the campaign's purpose or website structure. The audit checks whether the setting and resulting landing pages are appropriate.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00027 $0.00738
Opus 5.5 $0.00011 $0.00295
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00005 $0.00148
Haiku 4.5 $0.00003 $0.00074

Security

Grade A, and why

skill-092-pmax-final-url-expansion-control scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 21d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Skill 092: Performance Max Final URL Expansion Control

Purpose

Audit Performance Max Final URL Expansion settings to ensure appropriate control over landing page selection. URL expansion allows Google to dynamically select landing pages, which can be beneficial or problematic depending on business goals and website structure.

Data Requirements

Data Source: Standard + Custom GAQL

Standard Data:

  • data/account/campaigns/*/campaign.md — The Asset Automation Settings field shows opt-in/opt-out status per automation type. Check for FinalUrlExpansionTextAssetAutomation to determine URL expansion status. If not listed, defaults apply (opted in).

GAQL Query - Asset Group Final URLs:

SELECT
  campaign.name,
  asset_group.name,
  asset_group.final_urls,
  asset_group.final_mobile_urls,
  asset_group.status
FROM asset_group
WHERE campaign.advertising_channel_type = 'PERFORMANCE_MAX'

GAQL Query - Landing Page Performance:

SELECT
  campaign.name,
  campaign.advertising_channel_type,
  landing_page_view.unexpanded_final_url,
  metrics.impressions,
  metrics.clicks,
  metrics.cost_micros,
  metrics.conversions
FROM landing_page_view
WHERE campaign.advertising_channel_type = 'PERFORMANCE_MAX'
  AND segments.date DURING LAST_30_DAYS
ORDER BY metrics.clicks DESC
LIMIT 100

Run via /google-ads:get-custom with query name pmax_url_expansion.

Analysis Steps

  1. Check URL Expansion Status: Read Asset Automation Settings from campaign.md for each PMax campaign. Look for FinalUrlExpansionTextAssetAutomation: OptedOut. If absent, URL expansion is enabled (default)
  2. Analyze Landing Page Distribution: Compare intended URLs vs. actual URLs receiving traffic
  3. Assess URL Quality: Identify non-commercial pages, outdated content, policy-risk pages
  4. Evaluate Business Impact: Calculate conversion rate by landing page; identify wasted spend

Thresholds

Condition Severity
Non-commercial pages receiving traffic Critical
>20% spend on expanded URLs with low conversion Warning
Zero-conversion expanded URLs with >$100 spend Warning
URL expansion ON with no exclusion rules Info

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
