paper-structure

paper-structure is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from uchicago-dsi/ai-sci-skills. It costs 81 tokens per session (2,729 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A planning guide for organising a scientific paper around the requirements of its target publication. It covers the paper's claims, section structure, word limits, and checks for unsupported claims.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when planning, drafting, restructuring, or auditing a paper, abstract, or rebuttal for a particular journal or conference.
Why use it?
It prevents a manuscript from using the wrong structure, spending too many words in one section, or making claims that go beyond its evidence.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00081 $0.02729
Opus 5.5 $0.00032 $0.01092
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00016 $0.00546
Haiku 4.5 $0.00008 $0.00273

Security

Grade A, and why

paper-structure scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 1mo ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

How it starts

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 239 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

Paper structure

Organization, not sentences. This skill decides what goes where and how much room it gets. For how a sentence sounds, use humanize with the register the venue file names. For whether a number is trustworthy, use sensemaking. For whether a claim outruns its evidence, use skeptical-labmate.

Structure is not universal. A clinical physics manuscript puts Methods before Results and weaves prior work through the Introduction and Discussion; a machine learning conference paper gives Related Work its own section and wants a reproducibility statement; some high-profile journals put Methods last. So the skeleton comes from the venue, never from habit.

Start by loading the venue

Read venues/<venue>.md before anything else. If the venue has no file, write one from venues/_template.md first — it takes fifteen minutes and every later decision depends on it. If the venue is genuinely undecided, pick the most likely one, say so, and expect to restructure.

Check the verified date in the file. Limits and required sections change between cycles. If it is more than a year old, confirm the numbers against the venue's own page before trusting them for a submission.

Fix the spine before writing anything

Write one sentence that is the paper's claim. Not the topic, not the area: the thing a reader should believe afterwards that they did not believe before.

Every section then earns its place against that sentence. A section that does not advance it, support it, or bound it is cut or demoted to supplementary material, however much work it represents.

Two failure modes this catches early:

  • Two spines. If the sentence needs an "and", you may have two papers. Not always — a method and its validation are one spine — but check, because a two-spine paper reads as unfocused at every venue and reviewers say so.
  • A spine that is a description. "We built a pipeline for X" is a topic. "X is determined by Y, not by Z" is a claim. The second can be wrong, which is what makes it worth reading.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

paper-structure is a skill published in the GitHub repository uchicago-dsi/ai-sci-skills (20 stars, last pushed 4d ago), licensed MIT. It adds 81 tokens to every session and 2,729 once invoked, about $0.0003 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-09-22.
