stream-runtime-history

stream-runtime-history is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from vinilana/dotcontext. It costs 53 tokens per session (411 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A skill for storing and retrieving runtime history—such as traces, sessions, replays, and datasets—in bounded pages. JSONL is a file format that stores one JSON record per line.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to add cursor-based pagination, incremental JSONL reading, summaries, retention and pruning, replay limits, or bounded multi-session processing.
Why use it?
It prevents memory use and response sizes from growing with the full history, while preserving access to older and active records.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00053 $0.00411
Opus 5 $0.00026 $0.00205
Sonnet 5 $0.00011 $0.00082
Haiku 4.5 $0.00005 $0.00041

Security

Grade A, and why

stream-runtime-history scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 5d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Stream Runtime History

Make memory and response size proportional to a requested page.

Workflow

  1. Identify the cardinality and byte growth of every source collection.
  2. Define default and maximum page sizes before changing an API.
  3. Read JSONL incrementally and stop as soon as the page is complete.
  4. Return an opaque, versioned cursor and explicit partial metadata.
  5. Replace hot-path historical scans with bounded summary indexes.
  6. Limit replay materialization at the source, transformation, response, and persistence layers.
  7. Process multi-session work with bounded concurrency.
  8. Add retention with dry-run, active-session protection, and crash-safe writes.

Required invariants

  • Never implement pagination by loading everything and slicing afterward.
  • Never return complete source arrays inside a partial replay.
  • Never use Promise.all over an unbounded set of sessions or files.
  • Keep point reads by ID available.
  • Read legacy runtime files without destructive migration.
  • Keep active workflow evidence immune from age-based pruning.
  • Treat malformed final JSONL lines as bounded diagnostics.

Cursor rules

Keep cursors opaque to callers, include a version, bind them to the query direction and filters, and return a typed error for invalid or stale values. Do not promise raw byte offsets as a stable public contract.

Dotcontext routing

  • Define pagination and retention in harness ports/application.
  • Keep MCP cursor adaptation thin.
  • Coordinate trace segments with the hook payload skill.
  • Follow F-03.

Review gate

Require load evidence for a large trace and many sessions. Verify page-size memory, maxEvents semantics, dataset concurrency, legacy reads, prune safety, and cursor boundary cases.

Files

What ships with it

1 file beside SKILL.md in the same directory: the scripts, references and assets a skill reads on demand. Not counted in the per-session cost; read them before you install if any of them is executable.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

stream-runtime-history is a skill published in the GitHub repository vinilana/dotcontext (564 stars, last pushed 1mo ago), licensed MIT. It adds 53 tokens to every session and 411 once invoked, about $0.0003 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-30.
