maintain-mcp-oauth

maintain-mcp-oauth is a skill for Codex from vinilana/invokta. It costs 99 tokens per session (687 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A guide for diagnosing and changing the self-hosted OAuth login layer used by an MCP service. OAuth is the process that lets a user or connected app sign in and receive permission to use the service.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to test OAuth discovery and browser login stages, investigate Gemini connection problems, check dynamic client registration and token handling, and update the OAuth code safely.
Why use it?
It helps find login, consent, app-registration, token, and connection failures while keeping security checks and sensitive information protected.

Skill for Codex

Written for Codex: agents/openai.yaml present. Also seen: installed under .agents/ (shared by several agents); mentions AGENTS.md.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00099 $0.00687
Opus 5 $0.00049 $0.00344

Security

Grade A, and why

maintain-mcp-oauth scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 11d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Maintain MCP OAuth

Resolve the project root as three directories above this SKILL.md. Perform all relative reads and commands from that root; do not diagnose a neighboring project merely because it is the caller's current working directory.

Build evidence first

  1. Read AGENTS.md, docs/OAUTH_ARCHITECTURE.md, and docs/OAUTH_TROUBLESHOOTING.md completely.
  2. Read the affected source and tests under src/oauth, src/http-auth.ts, src/oauth-server.ts, test/oauth-provider.test.ts, test/oauth-server.test.ts, and test/http-auth.test.ts.
  3. Separate the browser interaction, authorization endpoint, callback, token exchange, and MCP request into distinct stages.
  4. Use sanitized logs and artifact counts or non-secret metadata. Never print passwords, cookie values, client secrets, registration access tokens, authorization codes, PKCE verifiers, state, or interaction IDs.

Diagnose safely

  • Probe discovery, protected-resource metadata, and JWKS without credentials.
  • Use npm run oauth:probe-dcr -- --url ORIGIN for DCR; it removes its client.
  • Use only a callback on a controlled origin for automated browser-flow tests.
  • Do not use the owner's credentials to authorize a client with an external callback unless the user explicitly approves that sensitive flow.
  • Treat an authorization code with no /token request as a callback/client problem, not a password or consent persistence problem.
  • Treat a second submit on the same interaction as stale; diagnose the first submit instead of weakening interaction replay protection.

Preserve invariants

  • Keep Authorization Code and mandatory S256 PKCE.
  • Keep DCR defaults on ES256 and a confidential client authentication method.
  • Continue accepting explicitly registered client_secret_post clients.
  • Validate access-token signature, issuer, audience, subject, and mcp:tools.
  • Keep refresh-token rotation and bounded token lifetimes.
  • Keep the single-owner model without public registration.
  • Limit consent redirect chains to HTTPS or exact HTTP loopback callbacks.
  • Keep authentication fail-closed during metadata, JWKS, or database failure.
  • Persist users, keys, clients, grants, sessions, and tokens together.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
