kernelcad-print

kernelcad-print is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from w1ne/kernelCAD-web. It costs 102 tokens per session (2,827 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A workflow that takes a 3D model through FDM printability checks, slicing, and sending the resulting G-code to a network printer. FDM is a common 3D-printing method that builds parts layer by layer from melted filament.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to choose an orientation, check whether the model fits the printer process, create printer instructions, upload them, and start the print.
Why use it?
It checks for unsupported overhangs, weak walls, oversized parts, and other print risks before material and printer time are used.

Skill for Claude CodeCodex

Written for no agent in particular: nothing here depends on one.

Good fit Use it to choose an orientation, check whether the model fits the printer process, create printer instructions, upload them, and start the print.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00102 $0.02827
Opus 5.5 $0.00041 $0.01131
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00020 $0.00565
Haiku 4.5 $0.00010 $0.00283

Security

Grade A, and why

kernelcad-print scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 5d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

kernelCAD — print loop

When to load this skill

Load when the task goes past a file on disk: the agent needs a physical part, not just an STL/STEP. This skill covers the last two hops — model -> G-code, and G-code -> printer — plus the check that should come before both: will it print, and which way up.

Before slicing: FDM printability check

Declare the check in the script and evaluate it — it is cheaper than a slice and says why a print would fail:

dfmSpec({ process: 'fdm' }) // as modeled, +Z up
dfmSpec({ process: 'fdm', buildDirection: '+x', nozzleMm: 0.4,
          maxOverhangDeg: 45, maxBridgeMm: 10, printer: 'generic-fdm' })

evaluate_script / kernelcad evaluate then fail on unsupported overhangs (dfm.fdm.overhang-unsupported), over-long bridges (dfm.fdm.bridge-too-long), walls under 2 × nozzle (dfm.fdm.wall-below-nozzle), and a part too big for the bed (dfm.fdm.exceeds-bed); small holes/pins, low bed contact, and tip risk warn. The overhang hint names the best axis-aligned rotation and what it buys, e.g. Rotate -90° about Y (.rotateY(-90), or dfmSpec buildDirection: '+x'): unsupported area drops from 938.2 to 0.0 mm². The full per-part report with all six orientations ranked is verify({ check: 'dfm' }) (the fdm[] block) or kernelcad dfm <file> --json.

Act on it by declaring that buildDirection. The gcode export below reads it and rotates the part into that orientation before the bed gate and the slicer, so the orientation that passed is the one that prints. Without an FDM dfmSpec the part is sliced as modeled. If you choose to print with supports instead, raise maxOverhangDeg to 90 and pass supports: true.

Worked example (fails as modeled, passes and slices on its side): examples/print-prep/wall-hook.kcad.ts and examples/print-prep/wall-hook-on-side.kcad.ts; cookbook snippet fdm-printability-and-print-orientation.

Slicing: export with target: 'model', format: 'gcode'

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

kernelcad-print is a skill published in the GitHub repository w1ne/kernelCAD-web (31 stars, last pushed today), licensed MIT. It adds 102 tokens to every session and 2,827 once invoked, about $0.0004 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-09-15.
