arduino-cli-skill

arduino-cli-skill is a skill for Claude Code from wedsamuel1230/arduino-skills. It costs 68 tokens per session (598 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A command-line guide for Arduino CLI, a terminal program used to find boards, install libraries, compile sketches, upload firmware, and investigate serial ports. It includes workflows for Windows, macOS, and Linux.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to discover boards and serial ports, install libraries, compile projects, and upload firmware from a terminal. It helps record the Arduino CLI version, board identifier, libraries, operating system, and port involved.
Why use it?
It removes uncertainty about which commands and options match the user's operating system, board, and installed software. It also highlights common upload, compile, port, and library-compatibility problems.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00068 $0.00598
Opus 5 $0.00034 $0.00299
Sonnet 5 $0.00014 $0.00120
Haiku 4.5 $0.00007 $0.00060

Security

Grade A, and why

arduino-cli-skill scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 12d ago.

The scan reads SKILL.md. This mod also ships 1 executable file (scripts/workflow-windows.ps1), listed below but not scanned — reading those needs a real analyzer, not pattern matching.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 60 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

Arduino CLI Skill

Provide cross-platform arduino-cli workflows and command references.

Resources

  • references/commands.md - board, core, library, compile, and upload commands
  • references/serial-ports.md - OS-specific serial port discovery
  • rules/common-pitfalls.md - common command mistakes and recovery guidance
  • examples/README.md - runnable command sequences
  • ../../docs/board-support/uno-r4-family.md - Uno R4 Minima and Uno R4 WiFi support notes

Workflow

  1. Identify the user's platform and target board.
  2. Open references/serial-ports.md if the task depends on port discovery.
  3. Open references/commands.md for the exact command family you need.
  4. Check rules/common-pitfalls.md before suggesting upload or compile fixes.
  5. If the target is Uno R4 family and the problem touches WiFi, firmware bridge, or OTA-related setup, open ../../docs/board-support/uno-r4-family.md.
  6. Prefer arduino-cli JSON output when the result will be parsed or reused.

Compatibility And Proof Boundary

Record arduino-cli version, the core/index version, FQBN, libraries, host OS, and port before changing commands. Check library architecture support and board package compatibility. A successful compile is build proof only; an accepted upload is upload proof and does not establish hardware or system success. For IDE, PlatformIO, or vendor-specific commands, route to the appropriate branch instead of silently translating them.

Quick Start

arduino-cli board list
arduino-cli core list
arduino-cli compile --fqbn arduino:avr:uno path/to/sketch
arduino-cli upload -p /dev/ttyACM0 --fqbn arduino:avr:uno path/to/sketch

Verification

  • Confirm the fqbn matches the target board.
  • Confirm the selected serial port exists before upload.
  • Prefer command output over remembered defaults when troubleshooting.

See references/commands.md and references/serial-ports.md for detailed examples.

Shared Output Contract

Use the shared Arduino skill contract: state assumptions, required tools and versions, implementation steps, tests/evidence by proof stage, known limitations, and recovery/security notes.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
