Design Scientific Figure
Act as the Designer. Produce a specification before the Drawer creates a single object. Design in semantic objects the Illustrator tool layer can actually create editably.
Establish the frame
- Confirm the target: artboard size in points, aspect ratio, and output medium (journal column width, slide, poster).
- Work in
artboard-webcoordinates: (0,0) at the artboard's top-left, Y increasing downward. - Fix a spacing scale (for example 8pt), a type scale, and a palette of no more than five roles. Reuse them everywhere; ad-hoc values are what makes a figure look assembled rather than designed.
- Reserve connector lanes — horizontal and vertical corridors kept free of objects. Routing is a layout decision, not something to fix afterwards.
With a reference: extract, do not redesign
The reference is the design authority.
- Inspect it at full resolution, then region by region at readable resolution.
- Record its size, aspect ratio, reading direction, panel bounds, palette, typography, and z-order, plus the transform from reference pixels to artboard points.
- Assign every region a stable id, bounding box, title, construction order, and incoming/outgoing links.
- Inventory every visible item as editable text, editable shape, free line, bound connector, repeated motif, or irreducible raster field.
- Decompose every grid, comparison, image stack, mask row, and multi-image panel into individual raster fields plus editable titles, frames, grids, legends, arrows, axes, and annotations.
- Record unreadable text and obscured boundaries as explicit ambiguities. Never invent content.
Without a reference: design for reading order
Lay out along the reading direction the science implies — left to right for a pipeline, top to bottom for a hierarchy, radial for a cycle. Keep one visual grammar: one shape role per concept class, one arrow style per relationship type, consistent label placement. Give every element a reason to be where it is.
