edit-notebook

edit-notebook is a skill for Claude Code from YoungjaeDev/my-claude-plugins. It costs 61 tokens per session (499 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A structure-aware editor for Jupyter Notebook files. Jupyter Notebooks combine executable code, results, and written explanations in `.ipynb` files.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to add, change, or delete notebook cells while preserving notebook formatting and tracking inserted cells.
Why use it?
It avoids corrupting notebook structure or inserting cells in the wrong order when changing notebook files.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00061 $0.00499
Opus 5.5 $0.00024 $0.00200
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00012 $0.00100
Haiku 4.5 $0.00006 $0.00050

Security

Grade A, and why

edit-notebook scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 1mo ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Notebook Editing

Edit Jupyter Notebook files through a structure-aware path, never as raw text.

Rules

Tool Selection

  • .ipynb = NotebookEdit (Claude Code)
  • Codex has no NotebookEdit tool; edit through a structure-aware path instead: a short nbformat Python snippet (read → mutate cells → write), never raw text edits. Detect the interpreter first (python3 → python → py -3; name-pinning breaks either macOS or Windows), check with <py> -c "import nbformat", and install on miss with the same interpreter: <py> -m pip install nbformat. A bare pip can target a different environment than the one checked; nbformat is not in the stdlib
  • Never use Edit, Write, or Bash(sed/cat) on .ipynb

Cell Insertion: cell_id Tracking (Required)

NotebookEdit returns inserted cell's id. Track it for sequential insertion:

NotebookEdit(edit_mode="insert", cell_type="code", new_source="...")
-> Returns cell_id='abc123'

NotebookEdit(edit_mode="insert", cell_id="abc123", cell_type="code", new_source="...")
-> Returns cell_id='def456'

NotebookEdit(edit_mode="insert", cell_id="def456", ...)

cell_id omitted: Cell inserted at BEGINNING -> reverse order bug

Execution Policy

  • NotebookEdit = edit only, no execution
  • After adding cells: "Please run the cells in Jupyter"
  • Do NOT use mcp__ide__executeCode (causes notebook state corruption)

Post-Edit Verification

  • Read first 30 lines to verify cell order
  • Confirm existing outputs preserved

edit_mode Options

Mode Purpose cell_id
replace Update existing cell Required
insert Add new cell Recommended (omit = top insertion)
delete Remove cell Required

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

edit-notebook is a skill published in the GitHub repository YoungjaeDev/my-claude-plugins (2 stars, last pushed yesterday), licensed MIT. It adds 61 tokens to every session and 499 once invoked, about $0.0002 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-09-05.
