autoresearch

autoresearch is a skill for Claude Code from YSAA1/harness-workflow. It costs 113 tokens per session (1,450 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A research-loop skill for investigating an open question through repeated rounds of hypothesis testing and evidence gathering. Each round proposes a testable explanation, checks it, challenges it, and records what was learned.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it for research that needs several rounds of reading, searching, experiments, and adversarial checking before reaching an answer or an honest inconclusive result.
Why use it?
It prevents an uncertain question from being treated as solved after one search or experiment. It also provides explicit stopping states when the evidence, time, or budget is insufficient.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00113 $0.01450
Opus 5.5 $0.00045 $0.00580
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00023 $0.00290
Haiku 4.5 $0.00011 $0.00145

Security

Grade A, and why

autoresearch scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 15d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

AutoResearch Research Loop

The user assigns a goal or question — an unknown approach is fine. This skill runs it independently: each round is "research -> hands-on -> review -> distill", checked against the completion criteria; not done yet means another round via the exclusion three questions. One-sentence entry, zero-interruption loop; the difference from deep research is that hands-on work is a first-class citizen — running experiments, writing measurement scripts and changing code to test hypotheses are all normal evidence gathering. Code changes go through implement (an independent experiment subtask that never touches the main research track); ship is never invoked inside a round (closeout is handled uniformly by this skill).

Entry points

  • autoresearch <goal/question> (materials optional): register the track and start immediately.
  • autoresearch <research-log path>: the goal already sits in the log header; resume directly. On re-entry, search existing logs under docs/research/ first.

Kickoff scan (planner)

  1. State the need as one deliverable goal (quote the user's verbatim words; any inference beyond them must be marked as such) and start the log (default docs/research/YYYY-MM-DD--<topic>.md; follow the project's research/notes conventions when present). The header background section = one-sentence goal + scope boundaries + completion criteria + known facts and candidate explanations — fixed for the whole run, guarding against scope swap and drift. The log is the track (self-registered Track header): with a recovery surface, plan registers the row; without one, do not force .harness/; with no lessons surface, distilled entries land in a final section of the log.
  2. Run the scan in parallel: read lessons and existing logs; general web search plus platform channels (when a platform-reading router such as agent-reach is installed, the evidence surface expands automatically — follow that skill's own protocol, e.g. doctor checks; otherwise degrade to general web search + direct primary-source reading). Candidate explanations = the competing hypotheses later rounds must distinguish.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

autoresearch is a skill published in the GitHub repository YSAA1/harness-workflow (3 stars, last pushed 16d ago), licensed MIT. It adds 113 tokens to every session and 1,450 once invoked, about $0.0005 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-09-23.
