evo-citation-checker

evo-citation-checker is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from Zhang-Henry/CoEvoSkills. It costs 51 tokens per session (556 once invoked), scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

A checker for BibTeX bibliographies, which are lists of academic references used in LaTeX and other research tools. It looks for signs that citations or their publication details may be fabricated.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to verify DOI-based and non-DOI citations, compare entries with academic indexes, flag structural warning signs, and write a validated answer about the bibliography.
Why use it?
It helps catch broken or invented references before they appear in a paper by checking identifiers, publication records, provenance, and suspicious metadata.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00051 $0.00556
Opus 5 $0.00026 $0.00278
Sonnet 5 $0.00010 $0.00111
Haiku 4.5 $0.00005 $0.00056

Security

Grade A, and why

evo-citation-checker scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 12d ago.

The scan reads SKILL.md. This mod also ships 1 executable file (scripts/utils.py), listed below but not scanned — reading those needs a real analyzer, not pattern matching.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Citation Verification Skill

Identifies fake/hallucinated citations in BibTeX files using multi-signal verification.

Verification Strategy

  1. DOI-first triage: Check DOIs via CrossRef API and doi.org resolution
  2. Provenance signals: DBLP biburl/bibsource and ACL Anthology URLs indicate real entries
  3. DOI registrant analysis: Suspicious prefixes like 10.1234, 10.5678 indicate fabrication
  4. Semantic Scholar search: For entries without DOIs, search by title
  5. Red flag analysis: Generic titles, fake journal names, metadata inconsistencies

Key Fake Citation Indicators

  • DOI returns 404 from CrossRef AND doi.org
  • DOI registrant code is a placeholder (10.1234, 10.5678, etc.)
  • Journal/venue name doesn't exist in any index
  • Publisher attribution is wrong for the claimed venue
  • Generic/vague title + generic author names + no provenance

Usage

import sys
sys.path.insert(0, '/app/environment/skills/evo-citation-checker/scripts')
from utils import verify_citations, validate_answer

# Run end-to-end verification
answer, details = verify_citations('/root/test.bib', '/root/answer.json')
print(answer)

# Validate output
validate_answer('/root/answer.json')

Scripts

  • scripts/utils.py: All utility functions including:
    • parse_bib_file(path) - Parse BibTeX
    • clean_bibtex_title(title) - Remove BibTeX formatting
    • check_doi_crossref(doi) - Verify DOI via CrossRef
    • check_doi_resolution(doi) - Verify DOI via doi.org
    • search_semantic_scholar(title) - Search S2 by title
    • has_dblp_provenance(entry) - Check DBLP provenance
    • has_acl_anthology_url(entry) - Check ACL Anthology URL
    • is_suspicious_doi_prefix(doi) - Check for fake DOI prefixes
    • analyze_entry_suspicion(entry) - Score suspicion signals
    • verify_citations(bib_path, output_path) - End-to-end entry point
    • validate_answer(output_path) - Validate output format
Files

What ships with it

1 file beside SKILL.md in the same directory: the scripts, references and assets a skill reads on demand. Not counted in the per-session cost; read them before you install if any of them is executable.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
