generate-test-files

generate-test-files is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from Zulelee/test-files-mcp. It costs 55 tokens per session (445 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A skill for generating local test fixtures through the Test Files MCP server, a local service that creates files for software testing.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to create dummy files, images, PDFs, CSVs, JSON, ZIPs, WAV audio, corrupted copies, and filenames with edge cases, then receive each file's absolute path and metadata.
Why use it?
It avoids hand-making files needed for upload tests, parser validation, quality checks, and failure handling.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00055 $0.00445
Opus 5 $0.00028 $0.00222
Sonnet 5 $0.00011 $0.00089
Haiku 4.5 $0.00006 $0.00044

Security

Grade A, and why

generate-test-files scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 8d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Generate Test Files

Use the test-files MCP server tools to create files on disk. Always return the absolute path and metadata from the tool response.

When to use

  • File upload size or type testing
  • Parser/validator error handling
  • QA fixtures (large CSV, multi-page PDF, oversized images)
  • Corrupted or malformed file testing
  • Filename edge cases (unicode, spaces, long names)

Tool selection

Request Tool
Exact byte size, random/zeros/text content create_dummy_file_tool
JPEG, PNG, WEBP, BMP create_image_tool
Multi-page PDF create_pdf_tool
CSV rows/columns create_csv_tool
Valid or malformed JSON create_json_tool
ZIP archive create_archive_tool
WAV tone or silence create_audio_tool
Corrupted copy of a file create_corrupted_file_tool
Tricky filename create_edge_case_filename_tool
Inspect existing file inspect_file_tool

Defaults

  • Output directory: ./test-files-output/ (or TEST_FILES_OUTPUT_DIR)
  • Do not overwrite existing files unless overwrite=true
  • Respect safety limits (TEST_FILES_MAX_* env vars)

Examples

  • "Create a 20 MB JPEG" → create_image_tool with target_size_mb=20, format="jpeg"
  • "CSV with 100,000 rows" → create_csv_tool with rows=100000
  • "Corrupted PDF" → create_corrupted_file_tool with file_type="pdf"
  • "30-second silent WAV" → create_audio_tool with duration_seconds=30, silence=true
Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
