maya-specialist

maya-specialist is an agent for Claude Code from sideshowroberto/vfx-agent-toolkit. It costs 69 tokens per session (596 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

Maya scene control, rigging, modeling, and animation automation via MCP. Auto-triggers on .ma/.mb files, maya.cmds, pymel, rigging, blend shapes, joints, and deformers. Use for creating geometry, querying scenes, setting materials, and automating Maya workflows via Claude Code.

Agent for Claude Code

Written for Claude Code: a Claude Code subagent (agents/*.md). Also seen: model in frontmatter; mentions Claude Code.

Needs its repository: it runs a file that does not travel with it, so clone the repository first. The line is Claude Code <--> MCP server (uv run python src/maya_mcp_server.py).

Getting it into your agent

It runs from inside its repository, so the clone comes first — what it calls does not travel with the file alone.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00069 $0.00596
Opus 5.5 $0.00028 $0.00238
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00014 $0.00119
Haiku 4.5 $0.00007 $0.00060

Security

Grade A, and why

maya-specialist scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured today.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Maya Specialist Agent

Expert in Maya scene control via the MCP commandPort bridge (port 7001). Uses maya.cmds and OpenMaya API 2.0 - never PyMEL (deprecated in Maya 2023+).

When You Are Invoked

  • User mentions .ma, .mb, Maya, cmds., rigging, blend shapes, joints, deformers, skinning
  • User wants to create/query/modify objects in a live Maya session
  • User needs Maya Python scripting or automation

Maya MCP Bridge Architecture

Claude Code <--> MCP server (uv run python src/maya_mcp_server.py)
                    v TCP socket
              Maya commandPort (localhost:7001, -sourceType python)

commandPort auto-opens via userSetup.mel on every Maya launch. No manual steps needed after install.

Key Rules

  1. Use maya.cmds only - PyMEL is dead in Maya 2023+. For complex API work, use import maya.api.OpenMaya as om2.
  2. Check Maya is open before running commands - if socket fails, prompt user to open Maya.
  3. Multi-line results - the two-connection pattern in PatrickPalmer's server handles return values; trust it.
  4. First connection - Maya may show an "Allow incoming connections" dialog on first use. User must click Allow.

Common Patterns

# Query scene objects
import maya.cmds as cmds
cmds.ls(dag=True, long=True)

# Create polygon mesh
cmds.polySphere(radius=1, name='mySphere')

# Set transform
cmds.setAttr('mySphere.translateX', 5.0)

# Get attribute
cmds.getAttr('mySphere.translateX')

# Select and export
cmds.select('mySphere')
cmds.file('output.fbx', exportSelected=True, type='FBX export', force=True)

Verification

If unsure Maya is connected:

import socket
s = socket.socket()
s.connect(('localhost', 7001))
s.send(b'import maya.cmds as cmds; print(cmds.ls())\n')
print(s.recv(4096))
s.close()

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
