gtm-server-side-tagging-guide

gtm-server-side-tagging-guide is a skill for Claude Code from Ad-Superpowers/ad-superpowers-plugin. It costs 117 tokens per session (5,190 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A guide to server-side Google Tag Manager, which runs tracking on a server you control instead of in each visitor’s browser. It covers sending events from that server to analytics and advertising services.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to plan a move from browser-based tagging to server-side tagging, implement server-based conversion tracking, and estimate hosting needs and costs.
Why use it?
It helps address tracking loss from ad blockers and browser restrictions, while reducing the number of third-party scripts loaded by the page. It also explains the added cost and complexity so you can decide whether the change is worthwhile.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00117 $0.05190
Opus 5.5 $0.00047 $0.02076
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00023 $0.01038
Haiku 4.5 $0.00012 $0.00519

Measured 1mo ago against content hash 4997ce043797, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-10-07, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

gtm-server-side-tagging-guide scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 1mo ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Server-Side GTM Guide

Server-side Google Tag Manager (sGTM) moves tag execution from the visitor's browser to a server you control. Instead of loading multiple third-party scripts on the client, your browser sends a single request to your server, which then fans out events to GA4, Meta, Google Ads, LinkedIn, TikTok, and any other destination. This improves page speed, data quality, privacy compliance, and resilience against ad blockers.

When to Use sGTM: Decision Framework

sGTM is not free and not simple. Use this decision tree to determine whether it is right for your situation.

sGTM Decision Tree

Is accurate conversion tracking critical to your business?
|
+-- No ---> Stay client-side. sGTM adds cost and complexity you don't need.
|
+-- Yes
    |
Are ad blockers or ITP (Safari) causing >15% data loss?
    |
    +-- No
    | |
    | Do you need Google Enhanced Conversions or LinkedIn CAPI?
    | (Note: Meta CAPI is now mandatory — implement via sGTM or backend code)
    | |
    |   +-- No ---> Stay client-side. sGTM won't add enough value.
    | +-- Yes --> Consider sGTM. Server-side is the cleanest way to implement these.
    |
    +-- Yes
        |
Is your monthly ad spend >EUR 5,000?
        |
+-- No ---> The cost of sGTM may exceed the value recovered. Start with
        | Enhanced Conversions client-side as a cheaper alternative.
        |
+-- Yes --> sGTM is strongly recommended. The data quality improvement
will pay for itself in better optimization.

Benefits vs. Costs

Benefit Impact Who Benefits Most
First-party cookie control Extends cookie lifetime from 7 days (ITP) to up to 400 days Safari-heavy audiences (EU, mobile)
Ad blocker bypass Recovers 15-30% of lost events Sites with tech-savvy audiences
Faster page loads Removes 3-8 third-party scripts from browser All sites, especially mobile
Data enrichment Add server-side data (CRM, margin, LTV) to events E-commerce, SaaS
Single point of control All vendor tags managed server-side Multi-platform advertisers
Privacy compliance PII never leaves your server EU businesses under GDPR
Meta CAPI quality score Score 7+ with redundant setup All Meta advertisers (CAPI is now mandatory for signal quality)

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
