status-update

status-update is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from adamfaik/claude-code-pm-starter. It costs 38 tokens per session (367 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A guide for drafting a project status update from task files and recent operational notes. It shapes the update for a team, manager, or stakeholder and includes progress, blockers, and next steps.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to prepare a concise Slack message, email, or document update based on the active project's tasks and recent notes.
Why use it?
It replaces vague memory-based reports with concrete evidence from the project's records and makes the needed action on a blocker clear.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00038 $0.00367
Opus 5 $0.00019 $0.00183
Sonnet 5 $0.00008 $0.00073
Haiku 4.5 $0.00004 $0.00037

Measured 5d ago against content hash a8c8a0231f00, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-08-30, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

status-update scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 5d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Status update

Draft the update the user owes someone, from files, not from their memory.

Steps

  1. Find the state. Read the active project's tasks.md (Status notes first, then Now / Next / Blocked) and any operations/ notes dated since the last update. If several projects are active, ask which ones the update covers.
  2. Ask two things only: who the update is for, and where it will be posted (email, Slack, a doc). Skip the questions if the conversation already says.
  3. Draft it in the user's voice per context/preferences.md. Default shape, unless preferences say otherwise:
    • One line on the headline: the single most important thing that moved or didn't.
    • What shipped or progressed, with the concrete result.
    • What's blocked, with the specific ask that would unblock it. An update without an ask is a diary entry.
    • What's next.
  4. Match the channel. Slack gets short lines and no headings; email gets a subject line; a doc gets the full shape.

Rules

  • Every claim of progress points at something real: a merged change, a decision made, a number moved, a meeting outcome. No "good progress on X".
  • Blockers name the blocker, not just the feeling. "Waiting on legal's read of the data clause since the 12th" beats "legal is slow".
  • After the user approves the draft, update tasks.md's Status notes so the next update starts from today's truth.
Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
