openspec-archive-change

openspec-archive-change is a skill for Claude Code from alphacornutum/layercake. It costs 31 tokens per session (1,314 once invoked), scanned A, a copy of openspec-archive-change, MIT.

A set of instructions for archiving a completed OpenSpec change, where OpenSpec is a system for tracking software specifications and tasks.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to finalize and archive completed OpenSpec changes.
Why use it?
It helps ensure the right change is selected and its completion is checked before it is archived.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

Fable 5.1 $0.00031 $0.01314
Opus 5 $0.00015 $0.00657
Sonnet 5 $0.00006 $0.00263

Security

Grade A, and why

openspec-archive-change scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 8d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Archive a completed change in the experimental workflow.

Store selection: If the user names a store (a store is a standalone OpenSpec repo registered on this machine) or the work lives in one, run openspec store list --json to discover registered store ids, then pass --store <id> on the commands that read or write specs and changes (new change, status, instructions, list, show, validate, archive, doctor, context). Other commands do not take the flag. Hints printed by commands already carry the flag; keep it on follow-ups. Without a store, commands act on the nearest local openspec/ root.

Input: Optionally specify a change name. If omitted, check if it can be inferred from conversation context. If vague or ambiguous you MUST prompt for available changes.

Steps

  1. If no change name provided, prompt for selection

Run openspec list --json to get available changes. Use the AskUserQuestion tool to let the user select.

Show only active changes (not already archived). Include the schema used for each change if available.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT guess or auto-select a change. Always let the user choose.

  2. Check artifact completion status

Run openspec status --change "<name>" --json to check artifact completion.

    Parse the JSON to understand:

    • schemaName: The workflow being used
    • planningHome, changeRoot, artifactPaths, and actionContext: path and scope context
    • artifacts: List of artifacts with their status (done or other)

If any artifacts are not done:

    • Display warning listing incomplete artifacts
    • Use AskUserQuestion tool to confirm user wants to proceed
    • Proceed if user confirms
  3. Check task completion status

Read the tasks file (typically tasks.md) to check for incomplete tasks.

    Count tasks marked with - [ ] (incomplete) vs - [x] (complete).

    If incomplete tasks found:

    • Display warning showing count of incomplete tasks
    • Use AskUserQuestion tool to confirm user wants to proceed
    • Proceed if user confirms

If no tasks file exists: Proceed without task-related warning.

  4. Assess delta spec sync state

Use artifactPaths.specs.existingOutputPaths from status JSON to check for delta specs. If none exist, proceed without sync prompt.

    If delta specs exist:

    • Compare each delta spec with its corresponding main spec at openspec/specs/<capability>/spec.md
    • Determine what changes would be applied (adds, modifications, removals, renames)
    • Show a combined summary before prompting

    Prompt options:

    • If changes needed: "Sync now (recommended)", "Archive without syncing"
    • If already synced: "Archive now", "Sync anyway", "Cancel"

If user chooses sync, use Task tool (subagent_type: "general-purpose", prompt: "Use Skill tool to invoke openspec-sync-specs for change ''. Delta spec analysis: "). Proceed to archive regardless of choice.

  5. Reconcile ARCHITECTURE.md

Before moving the change to archive, read root ARCHITECTURE.md and reconcile it against implemented code (src/server.ts tools, src/ packages, host protocol) and current openspec/specs/.

Update when the archived change altered layers, tools, flows, capability ownership, or design constraints. Sync may already have refreshed the map — archive is the final accuracy check against code.

If reviewed with no edits needed, note that in the archive summary (do not churn the file for cosmetics).

  6. Perform the archive

Create an archive directory under planningHome.changesDir if it doesn't exist:

    mkdir -p "<planningHome.changesDir>/archive"

Generate target name using current date: YYYY-MM-DD-<change-name>

    Check if target already exists:

    • If yes: Fail with error, suggest renaming existing archive or using different date
    • If no: Move changeRoot to the archive directory

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
