4-osp-baseline-scout

4-osp-baseline-scout is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from amirkiarafiei/open-scholar-peer. It costs 25 tokens per session (1,041 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A research-audit step that looks for comparison methods and datasets missing from a paper. A baseline is an alternative method used as a reference point, and a dataset is a collection of data used for testing.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to check the fairness and completeness of a paper's experiments and comparisons.
Why use it?
It helps reveal whether a paper's evaluation omitted important alternatives or test data.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00025 $0.01041
Opus 5.5 $0.00010 $0.00416
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00005 $0.00208
Haiku 4.5 $0.00003 $0.00104

Security

Grade A, and why

4-osp-baseline-scout scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 22d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

How it starts

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 85 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

/4-osp-baseline-scout — Adversarial Baseline Audit

Acts as an adversarial auditor identifying baselines and datasets the authors should have compared against but didn't.

Activation

Invoke the osp-baseline-scout-agent skill.

Inputs — none of these is a gate

  • phases.literature.status == "completed". Without a retrieved corpus the Scout searches from scratch, which it is built to do anyway — it just costs more calls and may miss what an earlier round already found. Run it, and say in Provenance that there was no corpus to start from.
  • historian is helpful and never required; the Scout works from the structured summary.
  • No structured summary either? Read .brain/input/paper.md directly for the task and the baselines claimed, and record that you did.

Record any skip before you start. The orchestrator is not in the loop when the user runs this command directly, so it falls to you: for every earlier phase still pending, set phases.<name>.status = "skipped" and phases.<name>.skip_reason to their reason, or "user ran /4-osp-baseline-scout first". A phase left pending reads as "not reached yet", and the final review cannot tell the difference.

Resource notice

⚠️ Makes ~6-10 API calls to search for SOTA methods and benchmarks. Expect 1-2 minutes, or longer when it reads a paper in full — one full-text read can take up to ~75 seconds on its own.

Opening block (print before step 1)

Render the opening block exactly as .agents/defaults/phase_block_template.md defines it — that file holds the rail, the rules and the widths, and it is the only place they are written down. This is phase 5 of 7 (baseline_scout); read the rail's state from session.json. Values:

DOING find baselines and datasets the authors left out
  READS .brain/raw/01_structured_summary.md
           .brain/raw/02_retrieved_literature.md
  WRITES .brain/raw/04_missing_baselines.md
  COST ~2 min, ~6-10 searches

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

4-osp-baseline-scout is a skill published in the GitHub repository amirkiarafiei/open-scholar-peer (48 stars, last pushed 12d ago), licensed MIT. It adds 25 tokens to every session and 1,041 once invoked, about $0.0001 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-09-24.
