database-migration-skill

database-migration-skill is a skill for OpenCode from darellchua2/opencode-config-template. It costs 33 tokens per session (2,325 once invoked), scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

A guide to changing database schemas over time with Prisma, Alembic, and Django migrations. A migration is a recorded change that updates a database structure in a repeatable way.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to create and test migrations, manage seed data, plan rollbacks, and prepare production-safe or zero-downtime changes.
Why use it?
It helps reduce risks such as failed deployments, lost data, difficult rollbacks, and downtime during schema changes.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00033 $0.02325
Opus 5 $0.00016 $0.01162
Sonnet 5 $0.00007 $0.00465
Haiku 4.5 $0.00003 $0.00232

Security

Grade A, and why

database-migration-skill scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 2d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What I do

I help you manage database schema changes safely and repeatably:

  1. Schema Evolution: Design schemas that change safely over time
  2. Prisma Migrations: TypeScript/Node.js migration workflow
  3. Alembic Migrations: Python/SQLAlchemy migration workflow
  4. Django Migrations: Django ORM migration workflow
  5. Rollback Strategies: Safe rollback planning and execution
  6. Zero-Downtime Migrations: Techniques for production-safe schema changes
  7. Seed Data: Manage test and development seed data
  8. Migration Testing: Verify migrations work correctly before production

When to use me

Use this skill when:

  • Creating or modifying database schema
  • Setting up a migration system for a new project
  • Writing reversible migrations
  • Planning zero-downtime production migrations
  • Managing seed data for development/testing
  • Debugging failed migrations
  • Setting up migration CI checks
  • Converting between migration tools
  • performance-optimization-skill: Handles runtime query profiling and optimization. This skill handles schema lifecycle. Index optimization can overlap — this skill handles index creation in migrations, performance skill handles query analysis.
  • python-backend-skill: FastAPI/Django/Flask project patterns that use these migration tools.
  • docker-containerization-skill: Database containers in compose configurations.

Step 1: Migration Principles

Rules for Safe Migrations

  1. Never modify an existing migration that has been applied
  2. Always make migrations reversible (with rare exceptions)
  3. Test migrations against production-like data before deploying
  4. Use separate migrations for additive and destructive changes
  5. Prefer additive changes — add new columns/tables before removing old ones

Migration Categories

Type Risk Reversibility Example
Additive (create table, add column) Low Easy Add phone column to users
Add constraint Medium Moderate Add NOT NULL, foreign key
Add index Low Easy Add index on users.email
Rename column/table Medium Hard Rename name to full_name
Remove column/table High Hard (data loss) Drop legacy_field
Change column type High Hard Change int to bigint
Data migration Medium Moderate Backfill new column from old data

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
