codebase-visualizer

codebase-visualizer is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from davila7/claude-with-skills. It costs 57 tokens per session (374 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A tool that turns a project's folders and files into an interactive HTML tree. It shows file sizes, groups files by type, and summarizes the project's size and contents.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when exploring a repository, understanding its layout, finding large files, or reviewing the mix of file types.
Why use it?
It provides a quick visual overview of an unfamiliar project and helps identify large files and major folders.

About the project

Claude With Skills is a progressive course that teaches developers to create reusable, portable Agent Skills for Claude Code, from basic SKILL.md files to advanced automation and plugin packaging. It is intended for developers who want repeatable instructions and workflows instead of repeatedly pasting the same guidance. The catalogue contains the course's skills, agents, and instruction.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00057 $0.00374
Opus 5 $0.00028 $0.00187
Sonnet 5 $0.00011 $0.00075
Haiku 4.5 $0.00006 $0.00037

Measured 4d ago against content hash f8ff59e54dbe, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-08-30, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

codebase-visualizer scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 4d ago.

The scan reads SKILL.md. This mod also ships 1 executable file (scripts/visualize.py), listed below but not scanned — reading those needs a real analyzer, not pattern matching.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Generate an interactive collapsible HTML tree of the project.

Usage

Run the visualizer script from the project root:

python3 ${CLAUDE_SKILL_DIR}/scripts/visualize.py .

This creates codebase-map.html in the current directory and opens it in the default browser.

What it shows

  • Collapsible directory tree — click any folder to expand or collapse it
  • File sizes displayed next to each file name
  • Color-coded dots for file types (.js, .ts, .py, .go, .rs, and more)
  • Directory size totals (sum of all files within)
  • Sidebar summary: total file count, directory count, total size, number of unique file types
  • Bar chart of the top 8 file types by total size

Ignored automatically: .git, node_modules, __pycache__, .venv, venv, dist, build, and any directory or file whose name starts with ..

Instructions

  1. Run the command above from the root of the project you want to visualize.
  2. Report the absolute path of the generated file.
  3. The script opens the file in the default browser automatically. If it does not open, tell the user to open the reported path manually.
  4. If Python 3 is not available, report the error from the command and stop.
Files

What ships with it

1 file beside SKILL.md in the same directory: the scripts, references and assets a skill reads on demand. Not counted in the per-session cost; read them before you install if any of them is executable.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
