template-startup

A setup and checking workflow for a fresh copy of the Research Project Template, a project used to run research-related code and produce documents or other outputs. It installs dependencies, runs checks, and executes the template pipeline.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to start the template project, check required tools such as Pandoc, XeLaTeX, and uv, run pre-commit checks, execute the sample pipeline, and report each checkpoint as passed or failed.
Why use it?
It shows whether the project works from a clean checkout and identifies missing tools or failed stages early. Some language-model stages can be skipped when Ollama is unavailable.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00098 $0.01857
Opus 5 $0.00049 $0.00928
Sonnet 5 $0.00020 $0.00371
Haiku 4.5 $0.00010 $0.00186

Security

Grade B, and why

template-startup scanned grade B with 1 finding against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 2d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Asks for rootmediumPrivilege escalation

A mod that escalates privileges can change anything on the machine, not only the project.

How it starts

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 249 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

Startup skill — install, run, validate

Natural invocations

  • "start"
  • "set up the repo"
  • "install everything and verify it works"
  • "run setup on template_code_project"
  • "does this repo work out of the box?"
  • (agent pointed at repo with no other context)

Inputs to confirm

  • Repo root — confirmed by presence of run.sh, AGENTS.md, infrastructure/, projects/templates/template_code_project/.
  • OS — macOS or Linux (Windows: use Docker; see docs/CLOUD_DEPLOY.md).
  • Ollama — optional; LLM stages auto-skip when absent.

Workflow

Step 0: Orient

Read START_HERE.md (3 min, project overview + key principles). Confirm you are in the repo root.

ls run.sh AGENTS.md CLAUDE.md infrastructure/ projects/templates/template_code_project/

Gate: All paths exist → continue. Missing run.sh → not in repo root, abort and navigate there first.

Step 1: Check prerequisites

pandoc --version # need any 2.x or 3.x
xelatex --version # need any version
uv --version # need 0.4.x or later

If xelatex missing (macOS):

brew install --cask basictex
sudo tlmgr update --self
sudo tlmgr install multirow cleveref doi newunicodechar subcaption bm

If xelatex missing (Linux):

sudo apt-get install -y texlive-xetex texlive-fonts-recommended fonts-dejavu

If pandoc missing:

brew install pandoc # macOS
apt-get install pandoc # Linux

If uv missing:

Follow the [checksum-verified uv installation instructions](../../operational/build/dependency-management.md#installing-uv).

Gate: All three tools on PATH → continue.

Step 2: Install Python dependencies

uv sync

Gate: Exit 0, no errors → continue. On failure: check a supported Python 3.10–3.14 interpreter is available and re-run.

Step 3: Install pre-commit hooks

pre-commit install
pre-commit install --hook-type pre-push

What ships with it

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

template-startup is a skill published in the GitHub repository docxology/template (19 stars, last pushed 2d ago), licensed Apache-2.0. It adds 98 tokens to every session and 1,857 once invoked, about $0.0005 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it B with 1 finding (asks for root). No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-30.
