template-autopoiesis

template-autopoiesis is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from docxology/template. It costs 51 tokens per session (677 once invoked), scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

A project generator that creates complete runnable child projects from a starting seed and grammar. It also checks that the generated project's results and provenance can be recomputed.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to generate research project structures, create source code and tests, verify provenance, and seal completed projects with a record of origin.
Why use it?
It makes generated projects reproducible and provides checks against tests that pass without proving the work is genuine.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00051 $0.00677
Opus 5 $0.00026 $0.00338
Sonnet 5 $0.00010 $0.00135
Haiku 4.5 $0.00005 $0.00068

Security

Grade A, and why

template-autopoiesis scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 7d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

template-autopoiesis

Project-scoped skill for the in-repo exemplar at projects/templates/template_autopoiesis/. Load this when working inside the project.

When to Use

  • Working inside the template_autopoiesis exemplar — running the grammar, materializing child projects, or editing source.
  • Forking this exemplar to build a different combinatoric project-generator.
  • Validating that a materialized child project's tests, coverage, and recompute-verified provenance still hold after a grammar change.

Quick Reference

# From the repository root
uv run pytest projects/templates/template_autopoiesis/tests --cov=projects/templates/template_autopoiesis/src --cov-fail-under=90

# Materialize a child project from the grammar (writes a full runnable tree)
uv run python projects/templates/template_autopoiesis/scripts/autopoiesis.py materialize --out-root /tmp/children

# Realize a full archetype end-to-end (spec → child → seal)
uv run python projects/templates/template_autopoiesis/scripts/realize_child_full.py

# Seal a materialized child with QR provenance
uv run python projects/templates/template_autopoiesis/scripts/seal_child.py

Pitfalls

  • Keep scripts thin. Business logic belongs in src/ (grammar.py, expand.py, materialize.py, realize.py, sealing.py, verify.py), not in scripts/.
  • Recompute, never trust recorded hashes. The whole point of this exemplar is that a child's provenance is re-derived from disk at verify time, not read from a cached manifest.
  • No mocks. All tests must use real generated files and real computation.
  • Outputs are disposable. Never hand-edit output/; regenerate from the grammar in manuscript/config.yaml.
  • Figure provenance fails closed. scripts/01_generate_manuscript_assets.py requires output/data/coverage_full.json and writes output/figures/figure_registry.json only after all four referenced PNGs exist.
  • Run from the repo root. Commands assume the template monorepo root as working directory unless the child AGENTS.md states otherwise.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

template-autopoiesis is a skill published in the GitHub repository docxology/template (19 stars, last pushed today), licensed Apache-2.0. It adds 51 tokens to every session and 677 once invoked, about $0.0003 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-09-03.
