stress-testing-argument

stress-testing-argument is a skill for Claude Code from icerain-cmd/humanities-superpowers. It costs 42 tokens per session (2,114 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A review method for testing a thesis, interpretation, concept, or manuscript against serious objections and alternative explanations.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to rank objections, examine counterexamples, compare rival explanations, and decide whether to defend, narrow, redesign, or postpone a claim.
Why use it?
It reveals weak evidence, flawed reasoning, overly broad claims, false novelty, and unresolved ethical risks before reviewers or readers do.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00042 $0.02114
Opus 5 $0.00021 $0.01057
Sonnet 5 $0.00008 $0.00423
Haiku 4.5 $0.00004 $0.00211

Security

Grade A, and why

stress-testing-argument scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 9d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Stress-Testing an Argument

Purpose

Identify the strongest informed objections to an argument, rank their severity, and specify repairs without reducing the thesis to a trivial claim. The skill challenges evidence, warrants, concepts, scope, method, ethics, and novelty while preserving fair representation.

Contract

Accepts

  • A thesis, enabling claims, argument map, evidence inventory, and scope boundary.
  • Optional rival theories, disciplinary criteria, reviewer comments, or venue expectations.

Requires

  • A sufficiently explicit argument to reconstruct charitably.
  • Access to the evidence and warrants being tested.
  • Separation between verified criticism and hypothetical reviewer concerns.

Produces

  • A steelmanned argument summary.
  • Ranked Objection records.
  • Alternative explanations and counterexamples.
  • Recommended responses: rebut, concede, narrow, redesign, or defer.
  • A stress-test gate report.

May produce

  • A revised thesis or scope boundary for researcher approval.
  • A fatal-flaw report.
  • FAIL when the argument cannot survive without abandoning its central contribution.

Fails when

  • The argument or evidence is unavailable.
  • Critique would depend on invented sources, consensus, or reviewer preferences.
  • The user requests abuse, humiliation, or predetermined rejection rather than analysis.
  • Ethical or legal issues require specialist review beyond the skill’s competence.

Guarantees

  • The argument will be represented in its strongest fair form before criticism.
  • Objections will identify a target claim, reasoning, severity, and repair path.
  • Residual risks will remain visible.

Does not guarantee

  • Reviewer acceptance, truth, novelty, or freedom from all objections.
  • That the proposed repair preserves every ambition of the original thesis.

When to use

Use after an argument map exists, before submission, during major revision, or when a new concept appears to explain too much. Use when evidence may support rival accounts, when a local interpretation expands into a historical or ontological claim, or when novelty depends on an uncertain genealogy.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

stress-testing-argument is a skill published in the GitHub repository icerain-cmd/humanities-superpowers (16 stars, last pushed 19d ago), licensed MIT. It adds 42 tokens to every session and 2,114 once invoked, about $0.0002 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-30.
