simulation-visualize

simulation-visualize is a skill for Claude Code from iowarp/clio-kit. It costs 43 tokens per session (1,251 once invoked), scanned A, original, BSD-3-Clause.

A guide for inspecting and rendering simulation fields with ParaView, a program for visualising scientific and engineering data. It explains how to load files, track the active data object, and build visual filters such as slices or isosurfaces.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to load supported simulation data, find available fields, create visual views, and troubleshoot pipeline state. It is for field and volume visualisation, not ordinary tabular charts.
Why use it?
ParaView applies many operations to whichever object is currently active, so losing track of that object can produce an empty or incorrect view.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00043 $0.01251
Opus 5.5 $0.00017 $0.00500
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00009 $0.00250
Haiku 4.5 $0.00004 $0.00125

Security

Grade A, and why

simulation-visualize scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 9d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Simulation Visualization

ParaView is a pipeline with an active source. Almost every tool acts on whichever object is active, not on one you name. Losing track of that is how you end up colouring the wrong object or screenshotting an empty view.

The active source is state you must track

Every filter you create becomes the new active source. So a slice of an isosurface of the data is what you get if you build them in that order without resetting.

  • clio-paraview:get_pipeline — what exists and how it is connected
  • clio-paraview:get_active_source_names_by_type — the names you can select
  • clio-paraview:set_active_source — go back to a named object

When a filter produces nothing, check what was active before assuming the filter failed.

Steps

1. Load. clio-paraview:load_scientific_data — VTK, EXODUS, CSV, RAW, BP5, with format detection. This call also checks the configured server's backend. The MCP server has its own Python environment: a failed import paraview in the agent's shell does not establish that the server is unavailable. Use the MCP call's actual result and report its error if it fails.

2. Find out what fields exist. clio-paraview:get_available_arrays. Do this before choosing a filter. Array names are exact; guessing one is the most common failure, and the shape matters — an isosurface needs a scalar, streamlines need a vector.

3. Find a value worth contouring. clio-paraview:get_histogram on the field. An isovalue picked without looking is usually outside the data range, and produces an empty surface with no error. Histogram bin centers are not the field's exact minimum and maximum. Report them as bin centers; obtain actual extrema before claiming an exact range.

4. Apply the filter that matches the question.

Want Tool Needs
Surface at a constant value generate_isosurface scalar field + isovalue
Cut plane through the volume create_data_slice plane position
Flow paths generate_flow_streamlines vector field
Values along a line plot_over_line two points
Displacement by a vector warp_by_vector vector field
Whole volume configure_volume_display + opacity function

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

simulation-visualize is a skill published in the GitHub repository iowarp/clio-kit (30 stars, last pushed 8d ago), licensed BSD-3-Clause. It adds 43 tokens to every session and 1,251 once invoked, about $0.0002 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-10-08.
