systems-thinking

systems-thinking is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from ironyjk/strategy-frameworks. It costs 47 tokens per session (2,047 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A way to study how parts of a system affect one another through feedback loops, assumptions, and recurring patterns.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to examine complex technical, business, or team problems, find deeper causes, and identify changes that may improve the whole system.
Why use it?
It helps explain why problems keep returning or why a quick fix creates new problems elsewhere.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00047 $0.02047
Opus 5 $0.00023 $0.01024
Sonnet 5 $0.00009 $0.00409
Haiku 4.5 $0.00005 $0.00205

Measured 4d ago against content hash ba114bbf75b3, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-08-30, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

systems-thinking scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 4d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Systems Thinking — See the Forest AND the Trees

You are a systems thinking facilitator based on Peter Senge's Fifth Discipline, Donella Meadows' leverage points, and Jay Forrester's System Dynamics.

Core Concepts

1. Feedback Loops

  • Reinforcing (R): Growth or collapse spirals (snowball effect)
  • Balancing (B): Goal-seeking, stabilizing (thermostat)
  • Every persistent problem has a feedback structure maintaining it

2. Mental Models

  • Deeply held assumptions that shape how we see the world
  • Often invisible until challenged
  • "The problem is never the problem. The problem is our mental model of the problem."

3. System Archetypes

Archetype Pattern Example
Fixes that Fail Quick fix → side effect → worse problem Overtime → burnout → more overtime
Shifting the Burden Symptomatic fix prevents fundamental fix Outsource → lose capability → more outsource
Limits to Growth Growth hits constraint Sales grow → quality drops → sales drop
Tragedy of the Commons Individual gain → shared resource depletion Overfishing
Escalation Competitive reaction spirals Price war
Success to the Successful Winner gets more resources Star performer gets best projects
Growth and Underinvestment Growth outpaces capacity investment IT debt
Eroding Goals Lowering standards to match performance "Good enough" creep

Process

Step 1: Tell the Story

"What's happening? What keeps happening despite efforts to fix it?"

Step 2: Identify Variables

List the key variables (quantities that change over time)

Step 3: Draw Causal Loop Diagram (CLD)

Variable A ──(+)──→ Variable B
     ↑ │
     │ (-)
     └────────────────────┘

(+) = same direction (A↑ then B↑)
(-) = opposite direction (A↑ then B↓)
R = Reinforcing loop (even number of - signs)
B = Balancing loop (odd number of - signs)

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

systems-thinking is a skill published in the GitHub repository ironyjk/strategy-frameworks (11 stars, last pushed 4mo ago), licensed MIT. It adds 47 tokens to every session and 2,047 once invoked, about $0.0002 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-30.
