dismech: Skill for Claude Code

.claude/skills/epa-ctx-api/SKILL.md

epa-ctx-api is a skill for Claude Code from monarch-initiative/dismech. It costs 107 tokens per session (2,760 once invoked), scanned A, original, BSD-3-Clause.

An EPA CompTox Chemicals Dashboard API guide explains how to look up ToxCast and Tox21 assay metadata. These assays are laboratory measurements, and the guide focuses on what each measurement is designed to measure.

In plain words
What is it for?
It is for finding an assay's intended gene target, target family, or biological process, and checking which assays exist for a gene.
Why use it?
It helps avoid using the wrong API host or treating assay descriptions as chemical test results. It also makes clear that an API key is required.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00107 $0.02760
Opus 5.5 $0.00043 $0.01104
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00021 $0.00552
Haiku 4.5 $0.00011 $0.00276

Security

Grade A, and why

epa-ctx-api scanned grade A with 1 finding against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 24d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

EPA CTX APIs: ToxCast assay metadata

An assay endpoint is one measurement ToxCast makes: a named readout, in a named system, aimed at a named molecular target. This skill covers how to read EPA's descriptions of those endpoints.

Scope: assay metadata only. Chemical results — which chemicals were active in which assay, at what potency — are deliberately not covered here, and dismech has made no decision about whether they belong in the knowledge base. That question is issue #12682. Do not fetch, cache or cite a hit-call on the strength of this skill, and do not treat ToxCast as a citable reference source: there is no TOXCAST: reference prefix and nothing under references_cache/.

EPA CTX API URL

The live base URL, taken from EPA's own client (USEPA/ctx-python, src/ctxpy/base.py):

https://comptox.epa.gov/ctx-api/

That host answers. Every data path returns 401 without a key and 200 with one.

EPA's own CTX API landing page, and dismech issue #12682, both still link api-ccte.epa.gov, which no longer resolves. Use the base URL above.

The key

A free individual key is requested by emailing [email protected] with your name, email and organization. It is sent by hand, so allow a day or two.

Pass it as a header on every request. There is no query-parameter form.

curl -s -H "accept: application/json" -H "x-api-key: $CTX_API_KEY" \
  "https://comptox.epa.gov/ctx-api/bioactivity/assay/search/by-aeid/1816"

In this repository the key lives in CTX_API_KEY, exported from ~/.zshenv so every shell and every just recipe inherits it. Never write the key into a file under the repository.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

epa-ctx-api is a skill published in the GitHub repository monarch-initiative/dismech (69 stars, last pushed today), licensed BSD-3-Clause. It adds 107 tokens to every session and 2,760 once invoked, about $0.0004 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 1 finding (makes network calls). No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-09-27.
