everything-search

everything-search is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from NingCiQiu/everything-mcp. It costs 59 tokens per session (301 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A skill for searching files and folders on Windows with Everything Search, a fast local filename-search tool. It uses the tool's available local search backends instead of scanning the disk recursively.

In plain words
What is it for?
Finding local files or directories by name, locating installed application files, and checking candidate launcher paths.
Why use it?
It helps locate files, folders, and possible application launchers quickly, while reporting when the required search backend is unavailable.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00059 $0.00301
Opus 5 $0.00030 $0.00151
Sonnet 5 $0.00012 $0.00060
Haiku 4.5 $0.00006 $0.00030

Security

Grade A, and why

everything-search scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 8d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Workflow

Use the everything_search MCP tool before recursive filesystem scans when the user asks to find local files or folders by name.

Use everything_count first when a query may be broad, then call everything_search with an appropriate max_results limit. Use everything_status when the backend path or availability is unclear.

Good queries include:

  • 开题报告
  • *.docx 开题报告
  • 论文
  • *.pdf 论文
  • Codex.exe
  • Everything.lnk
  • AppxManifest.xml OpenAI.Codex

If the tool reports that no Everything backend is available, tell the user that the plugin needs either Voidtools ES.exe on PATH/in the Everything install directory, EVERYTHING_ES set to the full es.exe path, or a local Everything HTTP server. Do not silently fall back to full disk scans unless the user wants a slower fallback.

For app launch target discovery, combine this skill with shortcut/process/manifest evidence. A search hit is a candidate, not proof that the path is the correct user-facing launcher.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
