alternatives-map

alternatives-map is a skill for Claude Code from stefanoskarakasis/Product-Marketing-Skills. It costs 109 tokens per session (3,644 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A research skill that builds a map of the alternatives buyers consider, including competitors, related tools, internal builds, and doing nothing. It uses evidence such as win/loss notes, sales calls, reviews, and analyst reports.

In plain words
What is it for?
It is for identifying why each alternative is chosen or abandoned and finding gaps that can inform product positioning.
Why use it?
It prevents teams from focusing only on named competitors while overlooking internal work or the status quo—the current way of doing nothing or keeping existing tools.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00109 $0.03644
Opus 5.5 $0.00044 $0.01458
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00022 $0.00729
Haiku 4.5 $0.00011 $0.00364

Security

Grade A, and why

alternatives-map scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 11d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Alternatives Map

How This Works

Buyers don't evaluate products in isolation — they evaluate against what they're already doing or could do instead. Most teams map only their direct competitors and miss the alternative that actually wins the most deals: the status quo. This skill builds the map from evidence — win/loss notes, sales call transcripts, review-site quotes, analyst reports — across all four types a buyer actually considers, not just named vendors, and deepens your brain's existing Section 3 in place. positioning-messaging needs 3+ alternatives before it builds, and positioning-ideas asks for them if the brain has none — this is the researched source both read.

Step 0 — Load brain Section 3 (current alternatives, however thin) and any guardrails from /context/meta-patterns.md.

Step 1 — Gather and name across all four alternative types: direct competitors, adjacent tools, DIY/internal build, and status quo. Status quo is never optional — in most B2B markets it beats every named competitor combined.

Step 2 — Map each alternative across three layers: why buyers choose it, why buyers leave it, and the unclaimed territory that leaves open. Status quo gets a fourth: the real reason for inaction, distinct from the stated one.

Step 3 — Deepen brain Section 3 with the map (on user confirmation).

Step 4 — Learning Close: log the session to /context/skill-sessions.md.

Trigger

  • When: Defining or sharpening who buyers actually compare you to from research data — win/loss notes, sales call transcripts, G2/Capterra reviews, analyst reports, competitor sites — or when brain Section 3 has fewer than 3 named alternatives, no status quo, or generic "competitors" instead of named products.
  • Not for: Turning a confirmed alternatives map into positioning options or copy → positioning-ideas (divergent options) or positioning-messaging (shippable copy), run after. Full brain build from zero → product-marketing-context, run first if no brain exists at all.
  • Example prompts:
    • "Map our alternatives from these 6 win/loss notes"
    • "Here are 10 sales call transcripts — who do we actually compete with"
    • "Our alternatives section just says 'legacy tools and spreadsheets'"
    • "Build the competitive map before we run positioning"

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
