harness-sdk: Skill for Claude Code

.agents/skills/strands/skills/add-mcp-server/SKILL.md

add-mcp-server is a skill for Claude Code from strands-agents/harness-sdk. It costs 48 tokens per session (164 once invoked), scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

A guide for connecting a Strands agent to an MCP server in Python or TypeScript. MCP, or Model Context Protocol, is a standard way for an AI application to discover and use tools provided by another program or service.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when adding MCP tools to a Strands application, choosing a server transport, filtering available tools, or configuring several MCP servers.
Why use it?
It removes the uncertainty around choosing a connection method, loading tools, and configuring one or more servers. It also helps distinguish an application server from the separate server that supplies Strands documentation.

Skill for Claude Code

Written for Claude Code: shipped in a Claude Code plugin. Also seen: installed under .agents/ (shared by several agents).

This is strands-agents/harness-sdk's own configuration. It tells Claude Code how to work on harness-sdk itself, so it is not a mod to install elsewhere. Copy it as a starting point and replace the rules that are about this project. Everything harness-sdk configures →

About the project

Strands Agents is an open-source SDK for building and running AI agents in Python and TypeScript. Developers use it to create agents with model providers, tools, lifecycle controls, memory, sessions, streaming, tracing, and evaluations, and the catalogue includes add-ons for its agent-building workflow.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00048 $0.00164
Opus 5.5 $0.00019 $0.00066
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00010 $0.00033
Haiku 4.5 $0.00005 $0.00016

Security

Grade A, and why

add-mcp-server scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured today.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Add an MCP server to a Strands agent

Read the shared Strands skill and the MCP guide completely.

Confirm whether the user means an MCP server used by the Strands application or the Strands documentation server used by their coding assistant. For an application server, inspect its command or URL and required credentials, use the current managed MCPClient or McpClient integration, and verify initialization and tool discovery before relying on model-driven calls.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

add-mcp-server is a skill published in the GitHub repository strands-agents/harness-sdk (8,607 stars, last pushed today), licensed Apache-2.0. It adds 48 tokens to every session and 164 once invoked, about $0.0002 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-10-02.
