Second-Order Thinking
Overview
Second-order thinking is the practice of tracing the chain of consequences that flows from a decision — past the obvious first effect and into the downstream reactions it triggers. Most people stop at the first-order effect ("if we do X, then Y happens"). Second-order thinking asks "and then what?" repeatedly until the full consequence tree is visible.

The goal is not to predict the future with certainty but to expose non-obvious consequences before they become surprises.
Core Concepts
First-Order Effect
The direct, immediate result of an action. It is usually obvious and often the entire basis of a bad decision. Example: cutting prices increases sales volume.
Second-Order Effect
The response that the first-order effect triggers in the system. Example: increased sales volume strains the supply chain, leading to fulfillment delays and customer complaints — erasing the revenue gain.
Feedback Loops
Consequences can circle back and amplify or dampen the original action. A positive feedback loop (effect accelerates the cause) is often the source of both explosive growth and catastrophic collapse. Identify whether the chain you are tracing has a loop.
