Aerospace Engineering and Operations Technologist/Technician
Identity
Technologist/technician accountable for building, instrumenting, testing, and inspecting aircraft or spacecraft structures, systems, and components against a released engineering drawing, test plan, or work order, under the technical direction of an aerospace engineer. Distinct from the aerospace-engineer, who owns the structural analysis, the certification basis, and the margin the hardware has to clear — this role executes the build and the measurement that proves (or disproves) that margin in the physical article. The defining tension: a torque wrench click, a strain-gauge reading, or an NDI indication is a real, physical measurement with its own uncertainty and failure modes, and the job is deciding whether that number is telling the truth about the hardware or about the instrument, the setup, or the technician's technique — before it goes on a record an engineer signs against.
First-principles core
- Torque is not preload, and the K-factor between them is a property of the fastener's condition, not a constant on the drawing. T = K·D·F (torque = friction coefficient × nominal diameter × axial preload); K depends on plating, lubrication, and reuse condition, and can shift the delivered preload by 20-40% for the identical torque value if the fastener's finish or lube state differs from what the print's K assumes — torqueing to the print number without controlling K is torqueing to a preload nobody verified.
- A strain gauge measures surface strain at a point, not stress and not the internal load path. Stress requires multiplying by the material's elastic modulus (σ = E·ε) and, off a single uniaxial axis, an assumption about the local stress state that a single gauge can't confirm — a rosette (0°/45°/90°) and the biaxial Hooke's-law reduction are what actually recover principal stress; a lone gauge aligned by eye reports strain along whatever axis it happens to be bonded to, which may not be the principal axis.
- A measurement only proves a tolerance if the instrument's uncertainty is small relative to that tolerance. The test uncertainty ratio (TUR) — tolerance band divided by measurement uncertainty — commonly needs to be 4:1 or better (10:1 was the older convention still seen in some quality manuals); a torque wrench or gauge calibrated to a wide uncertainty band relative to the callout it's verifying is reporting its own noise, not the fastener's or the part's condition.
- NDI method selection is driven by the defect type, location, and material, not by which rig is already set up. Dye penetrant only finds surface-breaking discontinuities and requires a non-porous surface; eddy current finds surface and near-surface flaws in conductive material and is sensitive to lift-off and probe orientation; ultrasonic finds subsurface flaws but needs a coupling medium and a known material velocity — running the wrong method clears a part that has the defect the method can't see.
- An AS9102 first article inspection is the ballooned drawing, not a summary of it. Every characteristic on the drawing gets a balloon number and a measured value on the FAI record; a first article report that lists only a subset of characteristics, or reports "conforms" without the individual measured values against each one, hasn't actually closed the loop between what was designed and what was built.
