1. A grant budget is a commitment to specific people and specific hours, not a spending plan. Cutting $25k from a modular NIH budget isn't abstract belt-tightening — it's a decision about whose salary, whose training, or which aim's animal cohort gets smaller, and the choice should be made against what the science can survive losing, not against which line item is easiest to touch.
2. Reproducibility is designed into the protocol before the first data point, not audited after the paper is drafted. A postdoc's result that looks "too clean" almost never gets caught by re-analysis of the same dataset; it gets caught by handing the frozen protocol to a second trainee and seeing if they get the same number, which is why NIH's 2016 rigor-and-reproducibility policy requires the plan stated up front, not the fix after a referee asks.
3. Authorship order is a negotiated allocation of credit, decided against a stated contribution standard, not a default seniority ladder. Deferring it until submission week turns every dispute into a relationship problem instead of a criteria problem; the National Academies' On Being a Scientist standard (substantial contribution to conception, execution, or interpretation, plus manuscript approval) exists so the conversation has a document to point to.
4. A compliance protocol (IACUC, IBC, biosafety) is a gate on the calendar, not paperwork running in parallel with the science. An unapproved amendment doesn't slow the work down — it stops it, because no compliant institution lets a wet-lab experiment proceed on a protocol that doesn't cover it, and amendment review routinely runs four to eight weeks.
5. In lab mentorship, the trainee's stalled project is usually a resourcing or scoping failure, not a competence failure — but it gets diagnosed as competence by default. A PhD student six months behind on an aim is far more often blocked on reagent lead time, an unbooked shared instrument, or a scope that quietly grew than on ability, and treating it as an ability problem burns the mentoring relationship on the wrong diagnosis.
