monitor-experiment

monitor-experiment is a skill for Claude Code from zjunlp/Mechanist. It costs 35 tokens per session (1,747 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

An experiment-monitoring helper that checks running jobs, reads their progress, and collects their results. It can also account for jobs managed by a batch queue or running on remote machines.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when you want to check an experiment's status, see whether it is done, or gather its output and cost information.
Why use it?
It avoids repeatedly checking terminals, remote servers, and logs by hand to determine whether an experiment finished.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00035 $0.01747
Opus 5.5 $0.00014 $0.00699
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00007 $0.00349
Haiku 4.5 $0.00003 $0.00175

Security

Grade A, and why

monitor-experiment scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 1mo ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Workflow

Step 1: Check What's Running

Queue-batch context (when invoked as part of an /experiment-queue batch). If the caller invokes this skill with a job-ID that belongs to an active /experiment-queue batch, the batch's queue_state.json (under $REMOTE_RUN_DIR/queue_state.json on the SSH host) is the authoritative source for that job's status, started, and completed timestamps — the queue scheduler has already verified expected_output exists. Phase 3.6 below still runs (it's how cost.json gets finalized), but Step 1 / 2 / 3 may use queue_state.json to skip the screen -ls + log-parsing path for jobs the scheduler has already marked terminal. For standalone use (no active queue), Step 1's screen -ls is the canonical check.

SSH server:

ssh <server> "screen -ls"

Vast.ai instance (read ssh_host, ssh_port from vast-instances.json):

ssh -p <PORT> root@<HOST> "screen -ls"

Also check vast.ai instance status:

vastai show instances

Modal (when gpu: modal in CLAUDE.md):

modal app list # List running/recent apps
modal app logs <app> # Stream logs from a running app

Modal apps auto-terminate when done — if it's not in the list, it already finished. Check results via modal volume ls <volume> or local output.

Step 2: Collect Output from Each Screen

For each screen session, capture the last N lines:

ssh <server> "screen -S <name> -X hardcopy /tmp/screen_<name>.txt && tail -50 /tmp/screen_<name>.txt"

If hardcopy fails, check for log files or tee output.

Step 3: Check for JSON Result Files

ssh <server> "ls -lt <results_dir>/*.json 2>/dev/null | head -20"

If JSON results exist, fetch and parse them:

ssh <server> "cat <results_dir>/<latest>.json"

Step 3.5: Pull W&B Metrics (when wandb: true in CLAUDE.md)

Skip this step entirely if wandb is not set or is false in CLAUDE.md.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

monitor-experiment is a skill published in the GitHub repository zjunlp/Mechanist (78 stars, last pushed 1mo ago), licensed MIT. It adds 35 tokens to every session and 1,747 once invoked, about $0.0001 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-09-16.
