lacuna-prior-work

lacuna-prior-work is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from tiptreesystems/lacuna-research-mcp. It costs 46 tokens per session (320 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A research workflow for finding and comparing earlier machine-learning and artificial-intelligence papers related to a proposed method, experiment, or implementation. It compares mechanisms, differences, and overlapping evaluations rather than treating a search as proof of originality.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it for literature checks, related-work comparisons, and choosing prior methods or baselines to include in an experiment.
Why use it?
It helps identify relevant prior work and useful baselines before an experiment is designed. It also prevents unsupported claims that no similar work exists.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00046 $0.00320
Opus 5.5 $0.00018 $0.00128
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00009 $0.00064
Haiku 4.5 $0.00005 $0.00032

Security

Grade A, and why

lacuna-prior-work scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 3d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Check prior work

If Lacuna tools are unavailable, point to the setup instructions and stop the Lacuna lookup.

  1. Identify the proposed method, problem or mechanism, and claimed difference. Query only the research concepts needed; do not send private code or documents. Use search_lacuna with search_type="paper", searching by method name and by a description of the mechanism. Do not restrict dates unless the user requests a time range.
  2. When paper results are too narrow, search research directions with search_type="cluster" and use get_direction_papers on a returned direction ID to broaden the comparison.
  3. Read relevant candidates with get_paper, treating versions of one work as one contribution. Lacuna summaries are derived text; check original papers for technical claims the comparison relies on.
  4. Compare shared mechanism, meaningful differences, and evaluation overlap, with a concrete implication for the experiment, such as a baseline to include.

Report the queries, filters, and papers inspected. Missing matches do not establish novelty. Generated proposals from get_hypothesis are not prior published evidence.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

lacuna-prior-work is a skill published in the GitHub repository tiptreesystems/lacuna-research-mcp (57 stars, last pushed yesterday), licensed MIT. It adds 46 tokens to every session and 320 once invoked, about $0.0002 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-11-03.
