video2dsprite

video2dsprite is a skill for Codex from 0x0funky/agent-sprite-forge. It costs 124 tokens per session (2,233 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A Grok Build workflow that turns a still image of a 2D character into animation sprites by creating motion, extracting video frames, removing a magenta background, and arranging the results.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to make video-sourced run, walk, or idle animations, dense sprite strips, sprite grids, and GIF previews. It requires Grok Build's image and video tools.
Why use it?
It helps create smoother run or walk cycles than drawing every pose by hand. It also avoids having to manually extract and prepare frames from a generated video.

About the project

Agent Sprite Forge is a Codex-oriented workflow for producing reusable 2D game assets such as sprite sheets, map layers, transparent PNG frames, and animated GIFs. It supports game developers working with Godot, Unity, or other 2D workflows by combining image generation with local processing, asset validation, and engine-ready exports, and its catalogue skills provide the workflow.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00124 $0.02233
Opus 5 $0.00062 $0.01117
Sonnet 5 $0.00025 $0.00447
Haiku 4.5 $0.00012 $0.00223

Security

Grade A, and why

video2dsprite scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 8d ago.

The scan reads SKILL.md. This mod also ships 1 executable file (scripts/video2dsprite.py), listed below but not scanned — reading those needs a real analyzer, not pattern matching.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Video2dsprite (Grok Build only)

Convert a base 2D character image into dense animation sprites using Grok Build's native video tools.

base still → image_to_video (in-place motion) → extract frames → chroma key → sample/normalize → strip / grid / GIF

Platform gate (read first)

Runtime Supported?
Grok Build (xAI) Yes — requires image_gen / image_edit + image_to_video (or reference_to_video)
Codex / Claude / other agents No — they lack Grok video tools. Tell the user this skill is Grok Build only and offer $generate2dsprite instead

If image_to_video is missing from the tool list, stop and explain. Do not fake motion with code-drawn frames.

This skill is an optional denser-motion path. It does not replace $generate2dsprite:

Use $generate2dsprite when… Use $video2dsprite when…
Crisp pixel sheets, fixed grids, identity-critical heroes User wants denser intermediate poses / smoother feeling loops
Attack/cast body sheets, prop packs, engine atlases Experimenting with video-sourced run/walk/idle motion
Production default for most game sprites User explicitly asks for video → frames → sprites

Video softens pixels, drifts identity, and leaves chroma fringes. Always QC; for production heroes, prefer $generate2dsprite unless the user wants the video look.

Parameters

Infer from the user request:

  • subject: character / creature description, or path to existing still
  • action: run | walk | idle | attack | custom motion phrase
  • view: usually side (side-scroller). topdown is harder — warn and keep camera locked
  • duration: 6 (default) or 10 seconds
  • frame_counts: which denser sets to export, default 8,16,24,48
  • cell_size: output sprite cell, default 128
  • anchor: feet (default for side locomotion) | center
  • bg: solid #FF00FF (required for chroma)
  • name: output slug
  • out_dir: working folder (default ./sprites/video2dsprite/<name>/ or project-relative)

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
