clinical-trials-search

clinical-trials-search is a skill for Claude Code, Codex from beita6969/ScienceClaw. It costs 28 tokens per session (1,239 once invoked), scanned B, original, MIT.

A natural-language search tool for ClinicalTrials.gov, the public registry of human and other health studies. It finds studies by the meaning of a question and returns details such as conditions, treatments, phases, and outcomes.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to find relevant clinical trials, inspect their design and results information, and support research questions such as locating studies for a condition or treatment.
Why use it?
It removes the need to learn the registry's search fields or build complex queries by hand.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

Security

Grade B, and why

clinical-trials-search scanned grade B with 1 finding against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 13d ago.

The scan reads SKILL.md. This mod also ships 1 executable file (scripts/search.mjs), listed below but not scanned — reading those needs a real analyzer, not pattern matching.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

How it starts

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 212 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

Search the complete ClinicalTrials.gov database of clinical studies using natural language queries powered by Valyu's semantic search API.

Why This Skill is Powerful

  • No API Parameter Parsing: Just pass natural language queries directly - no need to construct complex search parameters
  • Semantic Search: Understands the meaning of your query, not just keyword matching
  • Full-Text Access: Returns complete trial information including phases, conditions, interventions, and outcomes
  • Image Links: Includes data visualizations when available
  • Comprehensive Coverage: Access to all ClinicalTrials.gov data

Requirements

  1. Node.js 18+ (uses built-in fetch)
  2. Valyu API key from https://platform.valyu.ai ($10 free credits)

CRITICAL: Script Path Resolution

The scripts/search commands in this documentation are relative to this skill's installation directory.

Before running any command, locate the script using:

CLINICAL_TRIALS_SCRIPT=$(find ~/.claude/plugins/cache -name "search" -path "*/clinical-trials-search/*/scripts/*" -type f 2>/dev/null | head -1)

Then use the full path for all commands:

$CLINICAL_TRIALS_SCRIPT "CAR-T cell therapy trials" 15

API Key Setup Flow

When you run a search and receive "setup_required": true, follow this flow:

  1. Ask the user for their API key: "To search ClinicalTrials.gov, I need your Valyu API key. Get one free ($10 credits) at https://platform.valyu.ai"

  2. Once the user provides the key, run:

    scripts/search setup <api-key>

  3. Retry the original search.

When to Use This Skill

  • Finding ongoing and completed clinical trials
  • Identifying trial eligibility criteria
  • Recruiting status and enrollment information
  • Comparing treatment approaches in trials
  • Patient recruitment and enrollment research
  • Outcomes and safety data from trials

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

clinical-trials-search is a skill published in the GitHub repository beita6969/ScienceClaw (898 stars, last pushed 3mo ago), licensed MIT. It adds 28 tokens to every session and 1,239 once invoked, about $0.0001 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it B with 1 finding (reads agent configuration directories). No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-30.
