require-for-update-gate

require-for-update-gate is a skill for Claude Code from dyCuong03/unity-agent-team. It costs 38 tokens per session (535 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A Unity ECS condition that stops a system from updating until required singleton or component data exists. A singleton is data expected to appear on exactly one entity.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to gate systems on configuration entities, feature flags, or scene-activation markers, including several requirements that must all be present.
Why use it?
It removes repeated missing-data checks and prevents a system from running when its required configuration or marker is absent.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00038 $0.00535
Opus 5.5 $0.00015 $0.00214
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00008 $0.00107
Haiku 4.5 $0.00004 $0.00053

Security

Grade A, and why

require-for-update-gate scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 11d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

RequireForUpdate Gate

Intent

Declare a precondition that prevents a system from running when its required singleton or component type is absent, eliminating boilerplate null-checks and reducing unnecessary scheduling cost.

Use When

A system only makes sense when a config entity, feature-flag singleton, or scene-scoped marker exists. Multiple requirements can be ANDed.

Avoid When

The condition changes every frame — RequireForUpdate disables the entire system, including any OnUpdate side effects. If you need conditional logic inside an otherwise-always-running system, use a query filter instead.

Senior Pattern

  • Call state.RequireForUpdate() in OnCreate, once per required type.
  • Pair with GetSingleton() inside OnUpdate — the gate guarantees the singleton exists when OnUpdate runs.
  • Multiple RequireForUpdate calls are ANDed.

Code Template

[BurstCompile]
public partial struct SpawnSystem : ISystem
{
    [BurstCompile]
    public void OnCreate(ref SystemState state)
    {
        state.RequireForUpdate<SpawnerConfig>();
        state.RequireForUpdate<ExecuteSpawn>();  // scene-activation tag
    }

    [BurstCompile]
    public void OnUpdate(ref SystemState state)
    {
        var config = SystemAPI.GetSingleton<SpawnerConfig>();
        // config is guaranteed to exist here
    }
}

Anti-Patterns

  • Calling RequireForUpdate in OnUpdate (valid but wasteful — it rebuilds the query each call).
  • Using RequireForUpdate as the only gate and then calling GetSingleton without it — NullReferenceException if entity not yet created.
  • Relying on RequireForUpdate to enforce singleton uniqueness — it only checks existence, not count.

Runtime Risks

  • System silently never runs if the required entity is never created — can be hard to debug. Add a log in OnCreate to announce the gate.
  • RequireForUpdate with a non-singleton type that has many entities is valid but semantically misleading — prefer WithAll query filter for multi-entity filtering.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

require-for-update-gate is a skill published in the GitHub repository dyCuong03/unity-agent-team (7 stars, last pushed 2mo ago), licensed MIT. It adds 38 tokens to every session and 535 once invoked, about $0.0002 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-10-02.
