wow-client-targets

wow-client-targets is a skill for Claude Code from JBurlison/WoWAddonAPIAgents. It costs 47 tokens per session (656 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A version-targeting guide for World of Warcraft add-ons. It distinguishes Retail, Forever, and the current Classic progression client, then checks the relevant game API evidence before code or release decisions.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it before looking up APIs, detecting a client, choosing compatibility code, generating TOC files, or porting an add-on between supported WoW versions.
Why use it?
The same add-on code may encounter different APIs and interface versions in different WoW clients. This prevents silently choosing the wrong target or treating an outdated source snapshot as proof of compatibility.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00047 $0.00656
Opus 5.5 $0.00019 $0.00262
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00009 $0.00131
Haiku 4.5 $0.00005 $0.00066

Security

Grade A, and why

wow-client-targets scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 7d ago.

The scan reads SKILL.md. This mod also ships 1 executable file (scripts/targets.mjs), listed below but not scanned — reading those needs a real analyzer, not pattern matching.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 33 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

Client targets and source evidence

Target Branch in Gethe/wow-ui-source Meaning
retail live Current Retail
forever forever Forever; not Classic Era
classic classic Current Classic progression

all expands to these three only. Explicit targets override inferred configuration. Use the existing addon's documented targets, TOCs, and release configuration when the request omits targets; ask if these conflict or are inconclusive. Do not identify a client solely from a namespace name, a shared project constant, or one TOC interface value.

Snapshot and current sources

targets.json records source-inventory snapshots, not certification of every API. Interface numbers are derived from version.txt and must be confirmed against the target client's select(4, GetBuildInfo()) before release. A source mirror may lead or lag an installed client; honor an explicitly requested build.

With Node.js 22+, optionally run node <this-skill>/scripts/targets.mjs retail forever (or all) to print bundled metadata. No Node dependency is required to read the skills or perform source lookups using the host's tools.

For current evidence:

  1. Resolve https://api.github.com/repos/Gethe/wow-ui-source/commits/<branch> and capture the full SHA. Do not mix moving branch content with pinned evidence.
  2. Inspect version.txt and the tree at that SHA. Start with Interface/AddOns/Blizzard_APIDocumentationGenerated, then follow the UI addon's TOC/XML includes and client-specific files. Check shared versus game-specific loading conditions.
  3. For each needed capability, use the evidence record: target, commit, source path, contract, loading and restrictions, with source declaration, runtime observation and operation testing recorded separately. Missing generated documentation alone means unknown, not removed.
  4. Trace the loaded constants before implementing runtime detection. The same tree may contain Mainline, Vanilla, Mists, and other constants with different WOW_PROJECT_ID assignments. Do not invent a Forever project ID. When detection cannot uniquely distinguish clients, use per-target packaged configuration plus runtime build validation.
  5. Consult COMPATIBILITY.md, then the specific domain skill. Scope every deprecation and restriction to the target/build where it was verified.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
