houdini-material-library

houdini-material-library is a skill for Claude Code from dcc-mcp/dcc-mcp-houdini. It costs 78 tokens per session (1,185 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A Houdini library for saving reusable material settings as JSON files, assigning and reloading textures, managing color spaces, and inspecting shader connections.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to save, load, list, or delete material presets; assign image textures; reload changed images; configure OCIO color management; list color spaces; and inspect material assignments and shader links.
Why use it?
It avoids rebuilding material settings for each project and helps distinguish shared library presets from quick user snapshots stored by Houdini look development tools.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00078 $0.01185
Opus 5 $0.00039 $0.00593
Sonnet 5 $0.00016 $0.00237
Haiku 4.5 $0.00008 $0.00119

Security

Grade A, and why

houdini-material-library scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 11d ago.

The scan reads SKILL.md. This mod also ships 13 executable files (scripts/_library_common.py, scripts/assign_texture.py, scripts/delete_material_preset.py, …), listed below but not scanned — reading those needs a real analyzer, not pattern matching.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

houdini-material-library

Typed material-library tools that complement houdini-materials (material create/assign) and houdini-lookdev (shader-network editing and adapter-owned presets).

Tool groups

  • library-presets: save_material_preset, load_material_preset, list_material_presets, delete_material_preset — JSON files under a user-supplied library_dir (defaults to ~/.dcc-mcp/houdini/material_library/, override with DCC_MCP_HOUDINI_MATERIAL_LIBRARY_DIR).
  • library-textures: assign_texture, list_images, reload_image.
  • library-color: set_color_management, list_color_spaces (both read Houdini's OCIO configuration).
  • library-query (read-only): get_material_connections, get_shader_assignment.

Context limitations

  • Presets vs lookdev presets: This skill operates on a library directory (library_dir) — independent of the houdini-lookdev adapter-owned preset store. A library preset captures the full node type and all settable scalar parameters; lookdev presets capture evaluated values only. Choose the library path when sharing across projects; choose lookdev presets for quick per-user snapshots.
  • Texture mapping: assign_texture uses built-in texture controls on principledshader nodes, updates only the typed file-path parameters on mtlximage and arnold::image, or creates the matching image node for an exact input on mtlxstandard_surface and arnold::standard_surface. The texture must remain one regular, non-linked local file through every guarded mutation and readback. Digest work is limited to one initial pass, a 256 MiB file ceiling, and an elapsed-time budget checked before and after every read, including EOF. On Windows, a native read lease denies writes and replacement until mutation, final readback, and undo exit complete; later guards recapture physical identity metadata. Owned image nodes are bound to a durable material identity plus node, input, and Houdini session identity; stale or duplicate ownership fails closed. Every touched parameter, input, and newly created node is rolled back if mutation or post-mutation verification fails. Other node types and missing parameters fail closed without fallback wiring.
  • OCIO: list_color_spaces reads from Houdini's active OCIO config; set_color_management sets the OCIO environment variable and triggers a Houdini refresh when possible.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

houdini-material-library is a skill published in the GitHub repository dcc-mcp/dcc-mcp-houdini (12 stars, last pushed today), licensed MIT. It adds 78 tokens to every session and 1,185 once invoked, about $0.0004 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-30.
