maya-render-setup

maya-render-setup is a skill for Claude Code from dcc-mcp/dcc-mcp-maya. It costs 129 tokens per session (1,215 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A Maya setup tool for organising a 3D scene into render layers, object groups, attribute changes, and Arnold AOVs. AOVs are separate render outputs, such as masks or lighting passes, used when combining images later.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to create render layers and collections, apply per-layer overrides, configure Arnold AOVs, switch layers, and plan compositing output paths.
Why use it?
It keeps layer-specific scene changes and output locations explicit, while reporting when an older Maya layer system or unavailable Arnold feature cannot work as requested.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

Security

Grade A, and why

maya-render-setup scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 23d ago.

The scan reads SKILL.md. This mod also ships 10 executable files (scripts/add_aov.py, scripts/create_render_collection.py, scripts/create_render_layer.py, …), listed below but not scanned — reading those needs a real analyzer, not pattern matching.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

maya-render-setup (Pipeline stage)

Typed wrappers around Maya's render setup surfaces. Three surfaces exist and they are not interchangeable:

  • renderSetup (maya.app.renderSetup.model.renderSetup) — layers, collections, overrides. Default for new work and the only switching path verified to work.
  • legacy render layers (cmds.createRenderLayer / cmds.editRenderLayerGlobals) — pre-2017 renderLayer nodes. Readable always; switching is ignored by Maya in headless sessions, so the tool reports that instead of pretending it worked.
  • AOVs — Arnold aiAOV nodes wired into defaultArnoldRenderOptions.aovList. Arnold-specific and fail-closed when the renderer is unavailable.

Layer workflow

  1. create_render_layer — name it, set renderable, optionally activate.
  2. create_render_collection — populate with members (explicit nodes) or pattern (name glob). Not both.
  3. create_render_override — override node.attribute for everything the collection selects. absolute sets a value, relative offsets it, connection wires another attribute.
  4. set_current_render_layer — switch layers before rendering.
  5. plan_comp_outputs — lay out where the frames should land per layer / AOV.

AOV workflow

  1. add_aov — create and wire into aovList. Names are unique.
  2. list_aovs — inspect what is connected and its enabled state.
  3. set_aov_enabled — skip an AOV for one render without losing it.
  4. remove_aov — disconnect and delete when it is genuinely done.

Prefer set_aov_enabled(enabled=false) over remove_aov when the AOV may be needed later: removal deletes the node and cannot be undone.

Arnold prerequisites

Two things catch people out, both verified on Maya 2025:

  • defaultArnoldRenderOptions does not exist until an aiOptions node is created. Setting defaultRenderGlobals.currentRenderer to arnold is not enough. The AOV tools create the node when missing.
  • aovList reports size == 0 through getAttr(s=True) even when populated, so the next free index comes from listConnections. The contract does this correctly; do not reimplement it.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

maya-render-setup is a skill published in the GitHub repository dcc-mcp/dcc-mcp-maya (60 stars, last pushed yesterday), licensed MIT. It adds 129 tokens to every session and 1,215 once invoked, about $0.0005 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-09-23.
