painter-material

painter-material is a skill for Claude Code from dcc-mcp/dcc-mcp-substance3d-painter. It costs 58 tokens per session (607 once invoked), scanned A, original, MIT.

A Substance 3D Painter skill for inspecting a texture set’s material channels and controlling which channels a layer writes. It can also set one uniform value in an existing channel, but it does not paint strokes.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to inspect channel formats and bit depth, enable or disable a layer’s active channels, and create flat channel values on an existing layer.
Why use it?
It makes channel-level material changes explicit, such as deciding whether a layer affects colour, roughness, or height. It checks the available channels first so unsupported channel names do not silently fail.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00058 $0.00607
Opus 5.5 $0.00023 $0.00243
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00012 $0.00121
Haiku 4.5 $0.00006 $0.00061

Security

Grade A, and why

painter-material scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 1mo ago.

The scan reads SKILL.md. This mod also ships 3 executable files (scripts/inspect_material_channels.py, scripts/set_layer_channel_value.py, scripts/set_layer_channels.py), listed below but not scanned — reading those needs a real analyzer, not pattern matching.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Painter material

Painter's material surface is a set of typed channels carried by a texture-set stack, plus the per-layer choice of which of those channels a layer actually contributes to. This skill works directly on that model:

  • inspect_material_channels reads the stack's channel inventory - label, storage format, bit depth, and whether the channel is colour data. Use it to discover the exact channel names a stack supports before addressing one.
  • set_layer_channels replaces the set of channels a layer contributes. Painter calls this the layer's active channels, and it is the switch that decides whether a layer writes colour, roughness, height, and so on.
  • set_layer_channel_value writes one uniform value into one channel of an existing layer. This is the primitive behind a flat fill; it does not paint. The target channel must already be one the layer contributes; use set_layer_channels to activate it first, otherwise this tool fails with HOST_READBACK_MISMATCH and a prompt naming the channel to activate.

Channel names are resolved against textureset.ChannelType on the running host rather than being hard-coded, because the available channels depend on the project's shader. An unknown name fails with the supported list attached.

inspect_material_channels is read-only. The two mutating tools do not delete anything and are idempotent: re-applying the same channel set or the same value converges to the same state.

Verification contract. Channel activation is confirmed by reading the layer's active channels back from Painter, so it is reported as verified. A uniform channel value has no host readback in Painter's Python API, so set_layer_channel_value confirms only that the target channel is active afterwards and reports verified=False for the value itself. Do not treat it as proof that the intended colour reached the texture.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

painter-material is a skill published in the GitHub repository dcc-mcp/dcc-mcp-substance3d-painter (0 stars, last pushed yesterday), licensed MIT. It adds 58 tokens to every session and 607 once invoked, about $0.0002 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-09-20.
